Basketball

This year the team did not play a lot of league matches.

The team won 7/9 matches in the league. The league has not ended though, so we are still keen to see the result.

The Free State Basketball Association held provincial trials for the first time this year on the 19th of March 2016 at Navalsig High School in Bloemfontein. Of those who attended Neo Sobayeni was selected for U/16 Basketball team, Mosa Gumede was selected as a reserve for the U/16 team and Kearabetswe Mohale was selected for the U/18 team. However the games have not been played. We are still awaiting information about the national competition.

On the 7th of May 2016 the THS Basketball team was invited to Lereko High School in Bloemfontein, for the Lereko Annual Basketball tournament. The team made it to the semi-finals and won bronze (3rd place) in the tournament.

June came with another tournament; the first annual NWU U/19 Basketball Tournament, hosted by the North West University Vaal Triangle Campus. THS Welkom was the only team from Lejweleputswa. The tournament proved to be an eye opener for our players.

In September the FSBA together with the Department of Sport held Lejweleputswa district U/18 Basketball trials at Welkom High School. Neo Sobayeni (15) was selected for the U/18 Lejweleputswa team which competed at the provincial competition on the 1st of October 2016 at Welkom High school.

On the 1st October 2016 Neo Sobayeni (representing the Lejweleputswa district) was selected for the U/18 Free State team to compete at the national competition in December.

We appreciate the support we have received from everyone throughout the year and thank all our basketball players for their commitment and dedication throughout the year.

Debating

After two successful years of THS Welkom debating, expectations were even higher than before.

This year we began with three senior teams and two junior teams, however some experienced debaters left the team. We were then left with two senior teams and one junior team.

The Goldfields Debating League for the juniors ended with the THS junior debating team winning 3/5 debates. The senior team won 4/5 debates in their league, however the league has not ended. The senior team aims to win the Goldfields Debating League this year. The date for the semi-final and final rounds is not disclosed.

In the first term; the Goldfields Debating League hosted a district one day tournament for all the Lejweleputswa schools. The THS team sent five of the debaters (Kgosana Matee, Shaun Mmutsi, Naledi Ntima, Ofentse Bolowana and Buhle Sigcawu) to represent the school. The THS team won gold (1st Place) among all the schools which were present. Ofentse Bolowana was the overall best speaker in the tournament, he received a gold medal.

During the second school term; The Central University of Technology (Welkom Campus) and the CUT Welkom Debate and Public Speaking Society hosted the 3rd annual GOLD RUSH 3-day debating tournament. Three speakers from the school (Pule Mmula, Ofentse Bolowana, Buhle Sigcawu,) participated in the tournament as a team. The team made it to the semi-finals and came third (3rd) in the whole competition. Pule Mmula was one the Top 8 Speakers and Ofentse Bolowana was amost the Top 3 Speakers overall in the competition.

The third term had more competitions. At the beginning the Department of Education held a
Lejweleputswa district debating competition for senior and junior debaters. We were only allowed to send one team in the senior and junior league respectively. The junior team performed well but could not win the competition. However the senior team made it to the finals and came 2nd. The team will be representing the Lejweleputswa district in the department provincial competition at Aldam from the 27-29 October 2016. The following learners will take part: Pule Mmula, Ofentse Bolowana, Reabetswe Morake and Buhle Sigcawu.

In the middle of the term; Corruption Watch in partnership with Debate.Afrika hosted the 3rd edition of the Model Youth South Africa (MYSA) Schools challenge at the University of the Free State, in which some of the best schools from across the Free State Province participated in a 3-stage policy-essay, campaign and debate challenge. The THS Welkom Debating Team took part in this competition. From the team, ten learners were sent to Bloemfontein over three weekends to compete. The team pulled off an excellent performance among the best in the Free State for the 2nd year running. They won gold medals for excellent achievements as a team and individually. Their achievements are as follow:

· MYSA Free State Gold Medalists – All THS Welkom Debaters

· 3rd Best Speaker – George Motapane and Ofentse Bolowana (Different Groups)

· Best overall Campaign Video – Naledi Ntima and Kelly Naftal

· Best Speaker overall – Pule Mmula

At the end of the third term, the Free State Schools Debating Board hosted debating provincials at THS Louis Botha Bloemfontein. The provincial competition took three days in Bloemfontein. The best of the best schools and debaters in the Free State province attended. Our senior team made it to the final at the provincial competition. Overall the Free State Schools, we came 2nd as a team. Two of the debaters were selected to represent the province at the national debating competition in Limpopo at the end of the academic year. They are Pule Mmula and Ofentse Bolowana. Ofentse Bolowana was among the Top 8 Debaters in the Free State province and Pule Mmula was among the Top 3 Debaters in the Free State province. The two learners need financial assistance in order to attend and compete at the national competition. Please feel free to support us in this regard.

Under the guidance of Lesala Khetheng (The team Coach) and the leadership of Buhle Sigcawu (The team captain), our debating team performed excellently this year.

We thank our debaters for their commitment and dedication throughout the year. We also thank their parents and teachers for their support throughout the year! We hope you continue to support the team until the end of the league and with the national competition.

Prize-giving message

Master of ceremonies, Mr Swanepoel, honourable staff members, members of the SGB, parents and learners.

Please accept my sincere appreciation for being invited to this year's prize-giving function. I really feel honoured to open it with scripture reading and prayer.

Before I read something from Proverbs, I want to share a few thoughts about this event called the prize-giving function.

THS has this beautiful tradition to reward its learners for achievements during the year, whether it is for academic work, for sports, for cultural activities, for leadership, etc. With these prizes the school recognises its learners and appreciates what they have done. Therefore learners, you receive certificates, trophies and other forms of physical prizes.

Ongelukkig ontvang almal nie altyd 'n fisiese prys nie. Ka maswabi, ha se bohle re ka tholang dimpho. Dit is hoe die lewe ongelukkig werk en dus mag die lewe vir jou onregverdig voorkom. Ke ka moo bophelo bo leng ka teng. Bophelo ha bo ka moo re bo lebelletseng.

Sommige mense behaal hoër punte, ander sing mooier, ander hardloop vinniger, ens.

Although everybody cannot receive a prize, it is certainly possible for each one of you to acquire something specific during your school years, and that is "wisdom". What is wisdom you might ask? Let me try to say it is a certain quality of knowledge (not the knowledge itself), experience and good judgement you must have to choose between right and wrong on a minute by minute basis. Other words to describe wisdom are insight, understanding and common sense. Every one of us must strive to have as much wisdom as possible. Wisdom surpasses all material prizes and it makes you a sophisticated human being.

Let's then hear what the book Proverbs says about wisdom in Proverbs 3:13-17.
Happy is anyone who becomes wise — who gains understanding. There is more profit in it than there is in silver; it is worth more to you than gold. Wisdom is more valuable than jewels; nothing you could want can compare with it. Wisdom offers you long life, as well as wealth and honour. Wisdom can make your life pleasant and lead you safely through it.
Proverbs 3:13-17 Good News Bible

Note that Provers first talks about wisdom, and then about gold and silver and jewels. Not the other way round. We see so many examples, especially nowadays, about corruption, dishonesty, violence, greediness, unhappiness, and many other negative things. Hence, ensure that you do not follow the bad examples you see. Within all of this, don't be distracted by the materialistic world and wrong-doing. Follow the good examples in life. That is what our Lord wants.

Bly op die pad van wysheid en julle sal sekerlik 'n voorpoedige toekoms hê. Dula tseleng ya nnete, mme o be le bokamoso bo tjhabileng.

(Henry Welman)

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we come to You in the name of Jesus.

Your Word declares that we may come to You, the source of wisdom, for wisdom. We do that right now Father, and we ask that You would not only give us wisdom of men, but the wisdom of God. I pray that You would impart into us divine wisdom.

I pray dear Lord that You will give each learner in this school a good future. Show them the way they should go. Direct their steps, let their ears be inclined to hear Your voice, and correct them when they have gone astray.

Please help all us to know the difference between Godly and ungodly intentions, spirits, prophecies, actions and gifts. By the power of the Holy Spirit, help us to know who has been sent by You, and who has not.

Lord God, help all of us to be quick to hear and listen, slow to speak and slow to anger. Let the words of our mouths speak Your truth with wisdom, but in simplicity so that all may understand and benefit by them.

We pray this in the mighty name of Jesus.

Amen.

Tips for exam preparations

Top 10 study tips

In preparing for your final exams work through as many past examination papers as you can.

Remember, your success in the final exam will depend on how much extra time you put into preparing.

1. Have all your materials ready before you begin studying – pencils, pens, highlighters, paper, etc.

2. Be positive. Make sure your brain holds onto the information you are learning by reminding yourself how important it is to remember the work and get the marks.

3. Take a walk outside. A change of scenery will stimulate your learning. You’ll be surprised at how
much more you take in after being outside in the fresh air.

4. Break up your learning sections into manageable parts.Trying to learn too much at one time will only result in a tired, unfocused and anxious brain.

5. Keep your study sessions short but effective and reward yourself with short, constructive breaks.

6. Teach your concepts to anyone who will listen. It might feel strange at first, but it is definitely worth reading your revision notes aloud.

7. Your brain learns well with colours and pictures. Try to use them whenever you can.

8. Be confident with the learning areas you know well and focus your brain energy on the sections that you find more difficult to take in.

9. Repetition is the key to retaining information you have to learn. Keep going – don’t give up!

10. Sleeping at least 8 hours every night, eating properly and drinking plenty of water are all important things you need to do for your brain. Studying for exams is like strenuous exercise, so you must be physically prepared.

We remember them!

At the rising of the sun
and at its going down,
We remember them.

At the blowing of the wind
and in the chill of Winter,
We remember them.

At the opening of buds
and in the rebirth of Spring,
We remember them.

At the blueness of the skies
and in the warmth of Summer,
We remember them.

At the rustling of leaves
and the beauty of Autumn,
We remember them.

At the beginning of the year
and when it ends,
We remember them.

As long as we live, they too will live;
for they are now a part of us,

as we remember them.

When we are weary
and in need of strength,
We remember them.

When we are lost
and sick at heart,
We remember them.

When we have joys
we yearn to share,
We remember them.

When we have decisions
that are difficult to make,
We remember them.

When we have achievements
that are based on theirs,
We remember them.

As long as we live, they too shall live,
for they are a part of us, as we remember them.
