Flashback Friday: Rules for Teachers 1915


Rules for Teachers – 1915

1. You will not marry during the term of your contract.
2. You are not to keep company with men.
3. You must be home between the hours of 8 PM and 6 AM unless attending a school function.
4. You may not loiter downtown in ice cream stores.
5. You may not travel beyond the city limits unless you have the permission of the chairman of the board.
6. You may not ride in a carriage or automobile with any man except your father or brother.
7. You may not smoke cigarettes.
8. You may not dress in bright colors.
9. You may under no circumstances dye your hair.
10. You must wear at least two petticoats.
11. Your dresses may not be any shorter than two inches above the ankles.
12. To keep the classroom neat and clean you must sweep the floor at least once a day, scrub the floor at least once a week with hot, soapy water, clean the blackboards at least once a day, and start the fire at 7 AM to have the school warm by 8 AM.

Flashback Friday: School Rules for Students 1872

In order to establish a routine and manage the classroom, it was necessary for students to follow the rules established by the teacher. Here are some rules that the students would have to follow:

1. Respect the schoolmaster. Obey him and accept his punishments.
2. Do not call your classmates names or fight with them. Love and help each other.
3. Never make noises or disturb your neighbours as they work.
4. Be silent during classes. Do not talk unless it is absolutely necessary.
5. Do not leave your seat without permission.
6. No more than one student at a time may go to the washroom.
7.  At the end of class, you must wash your hands and face. Wash your feet if they are bare.
8. Bring firewood into the classroom for the stove whenever the teacher tells you to dot this chore.
9. Go quietly in and out of the classroom.
10. If the master calls your name after class, straighten the benches and tables. Sweep the room, dust and leave everything tidy.

Rules for Teachers – 1872

1. Teachers will fill the lamps and clean the chimney each day.
2. Each teacher will bring a bucket of water and a scuttle of coal for the day’s sessions.
3. Make your pens carefully. You may whittle nibs to the individual tastes of the pupils.
4. Men teachers may take one evening each week for courting purposes, or two evenings a week if they go to church regularly.
5. After ten hours in school, the teachers may spend the remaining time reading the Bible or other good books.
6. Women teachers who marry or engage in improper conduct will be dismissed.
7. Every teacher should lay aside from each day’s pay a goodly sum of his earnings. He should use his savings during his retirement years so that he will not become a burden on society.
8. Any teacher who smokes, uses liquor in any form, visits pool halls or public halls, or gets shaved in a barber shop, will give good reasons for people to suspect his worth, intentions, and honesty.
9. You may ride in a buggy with a man, if the man is your father or brother.

Terugblik: Skoolreëls uit 1970-jaarblad


[M Mynhardt wat in standerd 10A in 1970 was, het die ideale skoolreëls as volg neergepen.]

1. Loop met lang hare, dit lyk netjieser.

2. Moenie boeke oortrek nie, want anders kry die volgende ouens nie nuwe boeke nie.

3. Dra ringe, anders dink jou meisie jy is kwaad vir haar.

4. Ry met die fiets tot by die fietshokkkie, anders is jy moeg voordat die skool begin het.

5. Moenie die biblioteekboeke ingee nie, want anders het jy niks om te lees nie.

6. Moenie huiswerk doen nie, die onderwysers sal dit die volgende dag doen.

7. Dit is nie nodig om betyds by die skool te wees nie, jy word nie oortyd betaal nie.

8. Sit lekker agteroor, met jou voete op die tafel en rus, want jy loop genoeg tussen die periodes.

9. Dit is nie nodig om die onderwyser te groet nie, hulle groet nie terug nie.

10. Loop met jou hande in jou sakke, want dan kry jou hande warm.

11. Dit is nie nodig om die hele dag by die skool te bly nie, loop wanneer jy moeg word.

12. Loop en rook, want die onderwysers doen dit mos.

13. Moenie skooldrag dra nie, sodat die mense nie kan sien in watter skool jy is nie.

14. Gooi papiere orals rond. [Is daar iets nuuts onder die son??]
