Mentor Club: National Mentor Day

October 27th is #NationalMentorDay and I (pre!) celebrate every person who has helped another person thrive, at work or in life.

In honor of the special day, I thought I'd share the top five tips I've learned from my mentors:
1. Say yes - it's the path to learning and growth. - Eileen Drummond
2. Don't give up your seat for anyone. - Dr. Maya Angelou
3. Boundaries are an act of self-love. - Multiple Black women
4. Know your value; know your worth. - D. Keith Pigues
5. Take care of all you have been given - big and small. - John Frank

Mentor Club: Mentors are critical for our lives

Mentors are critical for our lives, professionally and personally.

Choosing the right mentors matter and we need to choose wisely because the wrong mentors can be neutral at best and harmful at worst.

A mentor shouldn’t ever tell you what to do

A mentor shouldn’t try to “mold” you to be like them

A mentor shouldn’t talk more than listen

A mentor shouldn’t make you reliant on them

A good mentor understands that you are unique, with your own strengths and talents and your own path to forge

A good mentor understands that their role is to support you and to build your capacity

A good mentor empowers you

A good mentor helps you believe in yourself and not in them

A good mentor refers you to others when they can’t provide the help you need

A good mentor is worth seeking out and priceless once found

Mentor Club: A mentor can help you ...

A relationship with a mentor who provides knowledge and support can assist you in answering even the toughest of career questions. The importance of having a mentor, or multiple mentors, throughout the course of one’s career cannot be overstated.

A conversation with a mentor can help you identify new opportunities, open your mind to new ideas, advise you on how to navigate the workplace, and be an essential component in the journey of achieving your professional goals.

Read below for more reasons that highlight exactly why you need to establish a mentoring relationship, today!

  1. A mentor can help you create a career path that fits your individualised passions, talents and interests.

  2. A mentor can assist you in finding ways to grow professionally.

  3. Chances are, your mentor has been exactly where you are right now…Mentors can share valuable life lessons and educate you on what to do (and sometimes what not to do!)

  4. A mentor can serve as a sounding board during times when difficult decisions need to be made.

  5. Mentors can help you grow a professional network by connecting you to others.

  6. Mentors serve as coaches that can help you during times of change and/or transition.

  7. Mentors serve as cheerleaders, challenge you, and push you to go farther than you thought you could go!

  8. Mentors can inspire you and keep you focused.

  9. Getting a second (and sometimes more experienced) opinion is never a bad thing!

Mentor Club: Why I Needed a Mentor!

We are all motivated and excited to get started with something new.  But what happens after that excitement goes away?  Can you still stay on track?

We ALL need an accountability partner, mentor or someone to keep us from getting distracted from all the bright and shiny objects or to just be there when we are in over our heads.

At the time, I still thought “I can do this on my own” but I scheduled a free call with a mentor anyway and that 30-minute call was a game changer.  During that call I finally asked for help.  I am here to say is it OK to ask for help.  There are others who have already made mistakes and recovered to tell their story.

Before starting with a Mentor I never had someone to bounce ideas off of, make me think more thoroughly about a problem, and simply call me out on my crap.

Yes, it has been a lot of work.  Most things that are worth it in the end are a lot of work.  Without a Mentor, we would not be where we are today.

It’s okay to ask for help.  It’s okay to make mistakes- I’ve made more than my fair share.  A mentor is there to give you a new perspective and help you get to your perfect day.

Keep up the good work, Tekkies.
