On Saturday 16 May 2026, our learners took part at the Goldfields Debate league at Henties Cilliers School.

Our Senior team placed 2nd in the league against Henties Cilliers and our Junior team placed 4th.

Congratulations to all involved. We are extremely proud of every learner!

Flashback Friday: Invited to speak at championship

The Welkom Technical High School's debating team had been invited to attend the second edition of the Cub Grill Schools Debating Championship, hosted by the debate union of the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. The event was held from Friday (22/09) to Sunday (24/09) and saw speakers from different regions in and around Gauteng and the Free State. This championship served as training for the team before the provincial competition. From the left are Shaun Mmutsi, Pule Mmula, Lesala Khetheng, Tshepiso Matlolane and Thato Parnell.

PAN African university debating championships (PAUDC)

Four students from the Central University of Technology, Bloemfontein campus qualified for two slots to attend and compete at the PAN AFRICAN UNIVERSITY DEBATING CHAMPIONSHIPS, which were held at Strathmore University, Nairobi Kenya.🇰🇪 Through merit and dedication, the institution selected these four students to debate at this tournament. PAN African university debating championships (PAUDC) is one of the most prestigious and largest tournaments in Africa, with over 62 teams, 35 universities and 10 countries. These countries include; Kenya, Rwanda,Tanzania, Nigeria, Uganda, Ghana, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Togo, Botswana. One of our teams, Team CUT A consisting of two speakers, Kerapetsi Booi(left side) and Alex Manise(Middle right) broke to out-rounds, Quarter finals, and came 3rd in that round. Unfortunately, their journey at PANS ended there. Despite all the hiccups that existed through the arrangements of PANS, these individuals worked very hard to ensure that practices take place to better equip themselves

PAN Africanism was the main theme of this tournament. A theme to embrace our Africanism and form unity with our neighbouring countries.

The 2 speakers, Kerapetsi and Alex also competed for Public Speaking, and did exceptionally well. All of these speakers are novice speakers, a debate term we use to describe “newly developed” university debaters. PAUDC was a great experience and exposure for us. Besides all the formalities of debating and public speaking, we got a chance to experience a lot about Kenya🇰🇪 From the Food they eat, right through to their culture and history. Thank you very much to our institution for allowing us to reach our dreams and fly the CUT and South African flag high. Thank you to each and every speaker who took their time to learn and attend this tournament. It has not been an easy year, but we all made it through.

Mostly, deepest gratitude to our Heavenly Father for keeping us safe and making this trip possible.

Congratulations to our Debating Team!

This is the HTS Debating team with Shaun Mmutsi as the coach and Caryn Petersen as the coordinator, at their end term tournament. They won 2 of the 3 debates and Nhlanhla Radebe was the team's best speaker ... From the back (left): Bulelani Radebe, Shaun as the coach, Caryn as the coordinator and Lesedi Motsoane. Well done to our debating team who have worked so hard to prepare for many debates. We are proud of you!

The online tournament ...

The Clash Of The Debaters (Online) tournament took place on the 1st - 4th of May 2020.

The tournament had more than 120 participants and more than 24 teams from all over the nation including international teams from Bermuda and Zimbabwe!! The online tournament was a success, leaving most inexperienced debaters with some knowledge and experience of what a debate tournament is.

We had our JCC Mayor, Miss Franchesca May as the Best adjudicator for 2020. She ranked 1st in the Top 10 adjudicators, with one of our HTS/Unitas teams breaking to Quarter finals. 

We thank all speakers who participated in this tournament, adjudicators and organising committee members and mostly our SA coaches who gave us light on what to do and what not to do.

The 2020 debating competition ...

Kgosana Moeketsi 

The competition is aimed at instilling diplomacy within the youth and making them more aware of the issues that the world is facing e.g. global warming, politics and how the increase of technology is affecting planet earth and also get the youth involved in an attempt to some these issues.

It's debating, but we're going to use the United Nations procedure. We're going to have country allocations and matters to discuss. Then a cultural night where we're going to have traditional wear on and perform for fun ... And then lastly the award ceremony
