PAN African university debating championships (PAUDC)

Four students from the Central University of Technology, Bloemfontein campus qualified for two slots to attend and compete at the PAN AFRICAN UNIVERSITY DEBATING CHAMPIONSHIPS, which were held at Strathmore University, Nairobi Kenya.πŸ‡°πŸ‡ͺ Through merit and dedication, the institution selected these four students to debate at this tournament. PAN African university debating championships (PAUDC) is one of the most prestigious and largest tournaments in Africa, with over 62 teams, 35 universities and 10 countries. These countries include; Kenya, Rwanda,Tanzania, Nigeria, Uganda, Ghana, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Togo, Botswana. One of our teams, Team CUT A consisting of two speakers, Kerapetsi Booi(left side) and Alex Manise(Middle right) broke to out-rounds, Quarter finals, and came 3rd in that round. Unfortunately, their journey at PANS ended there. Despite all the hiccups that existed through the arrangements of PANS, these individuals worked very hard to ensure that practices take place to better equip themselves

PAN Africanism was the main theme of this tournament. A theme to embrace our Africanism and form unity with our neighbouring countries.

The 2 speakers, Kerapetsi and Alex also competed for Public Speaking, and did exceptionally well. All of these speakers are novice speakers, a debate term we use to describe “newly developed” university debaters. PAUDC was a great experience and exposure for us. Besides all the formalities of debating and public speaking, we got a chance to experience a lot about KenyaπŸ‡°πŸ‡ͺ From the Food they eat, right through to their culture and history. Thank you very much to our institution for allowing us to reach our dreams and fly the CUT and South African flag high. Thank you to each and every speaker who took their time to learn and attend this tournament. It has not been an easy year, but we all made it through.

Mostly, deepest gratitude to our Heavenly Father for keeping us safe and making this trip possible.

Togo πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡¬ and Vietnam πŸ‡»πŸ‡³ here we come in 2023!

[Thank you, Alex, for the news and congratulations with this excellent achievement.]

Mr Lesala Arnold Khetheng

Lesala Khetheng
"You can walk a horse to river, but you cannot force it to drink the water," has always been his actions. He would tell you everything you need to know that is wrong and wright, but it's all up to you whether you want to listen to him and act upon it or not. Mr Lesala is a very busy man, but you would never find him missing anything that he needed to do. Do you wonder why? Because he knew how to spend his time. He lives up to " If you want to be more productive, you need to become the master of your minutes". A person who claims they know Mr Lesala would know how much he loved his teams! All of them even!

Starting from the very first time when he was still a learner at THS WELKOM HTS. He was a consistent and a hard working learner. One of the best the school has ever had! Not only did he grow to become the best in everything he did, but also did he become one of the best coaches at school. He lifts as he rises and he makes sure that you rise whether you want to or not ... Honour, Courageous and Dignity are his full names! He is one of a kind. Mr Lesala took my school to higher levels. He took my peers including me to places we never thought we'll reach! High ! Very High places I say! I'm talking about my debating coach here.

Alex Manise
I never understood why he would train us for 10-15 minutes during a 1 hour 30 minutes sports period. He would just say "Sir Alex, you guys must learn how to conduct a training yourselves! Every time when you enter the classroom, I must find you guys discussing relevant status quo related issues. Never waste previous time on asking each other how you are doing or whatsoever, if you want to socialise, do it during breaks"... The same would apply to basketball players. That taught me to manage my time because no one else can do that for you ... In short, thank you for all the memories spent. Thank you for all the lessons and all the hustles you went through to get us to tournaments!

All the best with your future endeavours. May the Holy God be with you and your family. Marriage is a big step, but trusting in God can make it a walk in the park.

️May God bless you and your new wife.

The Youth Day Derby 2020!

Welcome to the first edition of the Youth Day Derby 2020!

The Youth Day Derby is run by the South African Schools Debating Board (SASDB). The SASDB is a non-profit organisation that provides utmost training and competitions for debaters in the country from District, Inter Provincial, Provincial and National standards. International competitions as well!

This is the first time that the SA Debating board will be hosting such a competition. It is a British Parliament debate tournament in honour of Youth Day 2020! We will be debating in pairs of two (2) speakers in a team instead of the normal three (3) speakers in a team. It is an amazing opportunity for young speakers to learn and explore debating with speakers from different provinces at National level. Also a great opportunity for them to learn about the virtual hosting of a tournament. If you're interested in pursuing BA(LAW)/LLB after matrix, then this is your chance to learn now!

The online tournament ...

The Clash Of The Debaters (Online) tournament took place on the 1st - 4th of May 2020.

The tournament had more than 120 participants and more than 24 teams from all over the nation including international teams from Bermuda and Zimbabwe!! The online tournament was a success, leaving most inexperienced debaters with some knowledge and experience of what a debate tournament is.

We had our JCC Mayor, Miss Franchesca May as the Best adjudicator for 2020. She ranked 1st in the Top 10 adjudicators, with one of our HTS/Unitas teams breaking to Quarter finals.

We thank all speakers who participated in this tournament, adjudicators and organising committee members and mostly our SA coaches who gave us light on what to do and what not to do.

Lastly, a big thanks to Alex Manise as the Chairperson and Founder of The Clash Of The Debaters Tournament

February ... be there or be told ...

February, the month of love. Often people share love in this month, but I consider February as a month of love and fellowship. You can't have love without fellowship. These are the two essential things that must exist in our lives. We can't have a month of love without celebrating for it. Therefore, I have decided to host an event where we will not only share love, but we will also fellowship. It is time for us as HTS boys to care for one another and this event will bring us care and fellowship within ourselves. Catch me as your organizer and the rest of the organising committee there.

Date: 28 February
Time: 15h00-18h00
