Education is important: Part 7


Knowledge is Power
- a statement commonly attributed to an eminent English philosopher and scientist in 1597, still highlights today the importance of knowledge in the modern world. 

Education forms the basis of our knowledge and its development, from our earliest experiences at school through to Higher Education. Individuals use their knowledge in their professional and personal lives, and society as a collective of individuals shapes the world in which we live. 

Therefore the power of education is one of the keys to developing a successful society and benefits humanity at large. But things have gone very wrong! Society, values and morals are all in decline. How has education lost its power to build an effective and fair society? How can this decline be reversed?

In The Power of Education, the author goes back to first principles and asks: what is education, and what do individuals and society need from education? Reconnecting education with the heart and soul of humanity, and finding that great purpose of mankind is paramount. This is distinct from a knowledge factory that merely develops individuals for material advancement and personal progression. 

Values, morals, compassion, empathy, gratitude, mutual respect, fairness and social responsibility are all essential traits for individuals that collectively form a successful society, and these traits need to be instilled during the entire educational experience. By rethinking and developing an effective education methodology one can work towards building a better world, based upon equality and fairness for all.

Sterkte, matrieks!

Kabelo Makhetha saam met sy protégé,
Kamohelo Hoshoko wat ingenieurswese aan die
Universiteit van Kaapstad studeer.

'n Yskoue Donderdagoggend, waar die temperature die
vorige nag 'n rekordtemperatuur van -13 aangeteken het,
het vier ywerige matrieks na wenke van die Dux-leerder
van 2020 kom luister. Matriek en Covid-19 saam is geen
grap nie en wie beter as Kamohelo om vir hulle die pad
vorentoe aan te dui!
Die matrieks wat elke dag van die vakansie vir
ekstra klasse gekom het, is Sicelo Tseletsele, Rethabile
Mahasa, Tando Mtengwane en Katleho Majola.

Vir die ouers en onderwysers ...

Medies en regte is natuurlik prestige-studierigtings. Geseënd is die ouer met 'n slim kind wie se kop net in één rigting staan: 'n eie mediese of regspraktyk. En so-so status van studente wat in hierdie millennium waarin almal veronderstel is om na die sterre te reik, kies om onderwysers te word.

Onderwys, vermoed ons mos, is maar 'n valerige joppie vir vaalsiele. Met hierdie voorveronderstelling gaan jy deur die lewe totdat jy op 'n grys dag in jou eie lewe begin bid vir die regte onderwyser vir 'n kind wat jou hart uit jou liggaam geruk het.

Eers het jou hart ook mos maar net gesit waar harte gewoonlik sit: stil en pynloos, onwaarneembaar en heel in die middel van jou borskas. Dan tref die spesiale kind jou lewe: 'n Kind wat jou hart laat bloei en breek - 'n kind wat wil-wil ontspoor of reeds ontspoor het, 'n kind met emosionele probleme, 'n sukkelkind, 'n pynlike skaam kind, 'n kind met letsels en beletsels, 'n kind wat moeilik verstaan, 'n huilkind en naelkoukind, 'n rolstoelkind, 'n kind wat elke seisoen van meet af aan moet leer swem, 'n wiskunde-verskrikte kind, 'n hartuitrukkind.

Skielik is jou hart buite jou borskas: rou en kloppend, seer en woedend en bewend. En dan, as jou gebede verhoor word, beland die kind wat jou hart uit sy plek geruk het, in die reënboog-aura van 'n gebore onderwyser, die merkwaardige individu wat sy of haar plek tussen die heiliges kan inneem. Hierdie heilige onderskryf die woorde van Ina Huges:

Ons (die onderwyser) aanvaar verantwoordelikheid vir kinders wat dit geniet om gekielie te word, wat met skoolskoene en al in die waterplasse sal rondplas, hul nuwe skoolklere bemors, kort voor aandete 'n verbode versnapering sal eet en nooit hul skoene kan opspoor nie.

Ons aanvaar ook verantwoordelikheid vir kinders wat nie nuwe skoene besit nie, wat in plekke gebore is waarin ons vir geen geld ter wêreld sou wou rondloop nie; wat nooit sirkus toe gaan nie en wat grootword in 'n milieu wat 'n X-gradering gehoort te dra.

Ons aanvaar ook verantwoordelikheid vir dié soort kind wat nooit nagereg kry nie, wat nie 'n kamer het wat opgeruim moet word nie wie se foto nêrens op enigiemand se lessenaar staan nie. Ons aanvaar verantwoordelikheid vir kinders wat tussen werklike monsters leef.

Ons aanvaar verantwoordelikheid vir kinders wat al hulle sakgeld voor Dinsdag uitmors, tantrums in die supermark gooi, vol fiemies oor kos is, nie in die kerk stilsit nie.

Maar ons aanvaar ook verantwoordelikheid vir dié soort kind wie se nagmerries in helder daglig na hulle toe aankom; kinders wat enigiets sal eet, nog nooit 'n tandarts besoek het nie, wat honger ken soos wat ander fynproewerskos ken, wat hulleself aan die slaap huil.

Ons aanvaar verantwoordelikheid vir kinders wat rondgedra wil word en vir dié wat rondgedra móét word; vir kleintjies met wie ons die stryd net nooit gewonne gee nie en vir dié vir wie niemand 'n tweede kans gee nie.

Ons aanvaar verantwoordelikheid vir kinders vir wie ons kan stukkend druk, so oulik is hulle en vir 'n ander soort kind wat enigiemand wat genadige oogkontak maak, se hand sal gryp.

Op 'n onderwyssimposium in New York is gevra: "Watter eienskappe onderskei suksesvolle onderwysers van minder suksesvolle leerkragte?" Steve Rivkin van Amherst het gesê dat dit min of meer onmoontlik is om by die aanstelling van onderwysers waarborge vir sukses te identifiseer. Gevorderde opleidingskwalifikasies of werksonderwinding is dit nie. Eric Hanushek van die Universiteit van Stanford beweer dat die antwoord op hierdie vraag soos die Heilige Graal - die beker waaruit Jesus by die laaste Awendmaal gedrink en waarin Josef van Arimatéa sy bloed volgens die oorlewering van die kruis sou opgevang het - is. "Dit is die moeite werd om die antwoord te probeer vind,"sê Hanushek, "maar ek twyfel of dit ooit gevind sal word. Miskien het ons met oorerflikheid te doen. Miskien word sekere individue gebore om uitsonderlike onderwysers te wees."

As so 'n onderwyser eers jou en jou kind se hart heel gemaak het, as so 'n onderwyser jou kind lank gelede gehelp het om te glo hy kan 'n dokter of 'n regsgeleerde word, 'n suksesvolle entrepreneur of die beste tromspeler wat enige orkes kan begeer, salueer elke toegewyde onderwyser wat môre elke soort kind onder die son in die klaskamer gaan ontvang.

Growing up.
The next four years start here.
Take a deep breath as you walk through the doors.
Hear the feet pounding the floors.

Eyes are watching, everywhere.
Look at the seniors, we wouldn't dare.
Talk to old friends, the pressure ends there.

Decisions and choices, always in the way.
Affecting your future, day by day.
New things to learn, always a delay.

Stressful schoolwork and pressure to try.
They say always give 110%, but you just ask why?
Overwhelming, bored...you just want to cry.

Sports, pressuring you to do your best.
But you know you will never be as good as the rest.
Everything here is always a test.

They say these years will be the best years of our lives,
but others may think it's just another few years of throwing knives.

So hold onto the memories already made,
because soon it will all fade.

Here are fool-proof tips for success: 

* In Grade 12 you will have a very full programme so you need to work consistently and not leave tasks for the last minute.

* Pay careful attention in class to ensure that you understand the work.\

* Take your textbook to class every day and open it at the topic of discussion. Get to know your textbook really well. After a lesson in class read the relevant sections at home that afternoon or evening.

* Complete homework daily.

* Work neatly and accurately.

* When unsure or in doubt, ask your teacher or classmate.
* Attend any extra tuition offered to you.

* Start studying well in advance for examinations.

* Design a study roster and stick to it from Day 1.

* Refine your examination technique; when you revise, choose questions that will strengthen you in your weaker areas.

* Learn to plan and answer written questions clearly and systematically.

* Study hard for all your tests and internal examinations as if preparing for your final examinations.

* Use past examination papers for revision. Work through last year’s examination papers as well as the exemplar papers produced to assist you in preparing for your examinations. This will give you a good idea of the types of questions you can expect in the final examination.
