Prize giving 2019 ...

Rantsholo Malefane and Nhlanhla Radebe
This is a special award from Mrs. Harding to Nhlanhla Radebe in 8C

Mrs. Harding is Nhlanhla’s register teacher as well as his English and Afrikaans teacher. Since he first stepped into her classroom in January, there has never been a dull moment. Nhlanhla is a “once in a teacher”s lifetime learner”. He is Mrs. Harding’s little miracle and is very curious about everything and always wants to learn something new. He never gets tired of learning.

Throughout the year he attended Mrs. Welman’s gr. 11 and 12 extra Afrikaans classes and assisted learners and helped them with work they did not understand. He answers of Mrs.Welman’s grade 12 Afrikaans papers successfully.

Nhlanhla Radebe and mrs.
Alet Harding
Nhlanhla is one of HTS’s most dedicated class captains and is the number one student of the top ten of the grade 8’s and all these things make him very excited.

As 2019 progressed, Nhlanhla became more mature and serious.

It is Mrs. Harding’s last full year of teaching before retiring early next year. This special award to Nhlanhla is to thank him for the bundle of joy he has been in her class and for making her last year of teaching worthwhile and very special.

Prize-giving 2019

The annual prize-giving is an opportunity for us to celebrate the efforts made and achievements gained by our learners during the current academic year. It is an opportunity for us to formally congratulate those learners who have performed well in a whole variety of different areas.

Although we all know that taking part is a key element in sports, school events and life in general, recognition of achievement can be what makes us push ourselves and reach our full potential. The prize winners are a true representation of everything that we stand for here at HTS – these hard working young boys are a credit to the school and an inspiration to many among their peers.

It is through achievements such as those we recognise tonight that we are clearly able to see the skill, high expectation and commitment of our staff and pupils and these prize winners are great examples of what we hope for from our boys.

Preprysuitdeling-gebeure ... 'n kykie agter die skerms!

Baie selde word daar tydens 'n funksie gedink aan al die swoeg en sweet vooraf om dinge tydens 'n prestige-geleentheid op geoliede wiele te laat loop.

Hier is so 'n klein kykie agter die skerms.

The history and origins of Bosses Day

Bosses Day (also known as Boss's Day or National Boss Day), is a celebration that originated in 1958. Patricia Bays Haroski registered "National Boss' Day" with the US Chamber of Commerce in 1958. Patricia was working as a secretary for State Farm Insurance in Deerfield, Illinois at the time, and chose October 8 because she forgot that the birthday of her boss, who was her father, was actually on the 16th!

Four years later in 1962, Illinois Governor Otto Kerner supported Patricia's registration, and officially proclaimed the day. Happy Boss's Day, Mr. Swanepoel. thank you for everything you do for us and the school! Enjoy your day!!

Matrieks groet ...

WHO IS YOUR TRUE FRIEND?

The lawyer hopes you get into trouble,
the doctor hopes you fall sick,
the police hopes you become a criminal,
the coffin maker wants you dead,
only the TEACHER wishes to educate you
and liberate you from the bondage of ignorance.
Please hug the next teacher by your side,
he/she is one of your true friends.

[Thank you, sir, for sharing this with us.]

The JCC Mayoral Speech ...

Greetings: I wish to send my greetings to the parents, teachers and mentors, and all the supporters present. I would also like to send my greetings to the outgoing and the incoming councils.
Word of thanks to the council: It is a privilege and  an honor for me to stand here before you all today as the junior executive mayor for the term of office 2018/2019. The mayoral position was a position I accepted with open arms and vowed to give my full dedication in order for this council to succeed. I wish to thank you all for the connectedness through we worked together and overcame many obstacles. Likeone big family, we have been so infused, intertwined and intermingled into each like brothers and sisters. The spirit for which I am grateful and wish to see continue in the new council.
Message to the new council: To the new council, I have the following message: It is not easy. Being a councilor is not easy, in the sense that one has to equip oneself with skills that will make it possible for the council to function optimally. These include speaking skills and management to quote but few. As an organization, we have to uphold our mandate, which is to have an impact in the community and lead the youth in the right direction. We have to touch people's lives through our selflessness and a burning desire to make a difference. Welkom itself is faced with a problem of substance abuse by teenagers, and as if that was not enough, this is being done in school uniform.
Change: Ladies and gentlemen, it is no secret that we are the catalysts and agents of change in our communities and in our own small way we influence others by what we say, what we do and how we conduct ourselves, hence I challenged each and everyone of us for selflessness, commitment and the passion to serve. The very same way the world's icon and my role model, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. challenged each and everyone of us to serve mankind in whatever way possible. This is evident in his words about serving mankind when he said and I quote, "Everybody can be great, because anyone can serve. You don't have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to know about Plato and Aristotle to serve. You don't have to know Einstein's theory of relativity to serve. You don't have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace and a soul generated by love." Just as one needs and iron to sharpen another iron, humans exchange wisdom through interaction and sharing of ideas. We need to learn from each others' expertise through sharing of ideas, working together and observing others in action.
Closing: In the final analysis, I wish to once again welcome you all info the council and wish you all the best of luck. Thank you.

Nou of nooit ...

Comfort zone

Is it good to have a comfort zone?

People should not have comfort zones. Every situation should be treated as that of importance because with importance comes determination, the one thing people need to be, when working– determined. Classifying an activity or a place as your comfort zone causes you as an individual to loose focus and the passion to do something, it makes you take things for granted because you are convinced that you are good at them and therefore see no need or the urgency of doing them.

Instead of finding comfort in what you know, rather find it in learning new things. People should be more prone to learning and improving themselves. Kamohelo Majara has a better way of putting it when he says, "There's nothing more comforting that knowing what you are doing shall make you a better person."

Working on self is the best work investment one can make, for the work shall pay out for the rest of one's life.

These 5 food tips will help your studying stay in top form

Matrics face many challenges during their final exams. Here are 5 easy ways to make sure they perform at their best.

Are matric students mentally ready for their exams? According to Claudine Ryan, registered dietician for Compass Group Southern Africa, a strong memory depends on the health and vitality of the brain.

"The brain weighs only 2% of body weight and it contains more than a 100 billion brain cells, which uses up to 20% of the body’s energy," she says. "Glucose is the brain’s main energy source. Vitamins, minerals, amino acids and fatty acids also play a role in optimal brain function."

The best food during exams is a balanced diet that includes ‘brain foods’ rather than focusing on individual food items.

1. Have breakfast
Studies show that students who eat breakfast have improved memory function and concentration when compared to those who skip breakfast.

Have low GI carbohydrates that will ensure the brain has a continuous supply of glucose.

Try low GI toasted bread with mozzarella cheese or peanut butter, low GI cereals with low-fat milk, fruit salad and low-fat yoghurt or a fruit smoothie.

2. Grab a snack
Refuelling every 3 - 4 hours is crucial to keeping blood sugar and energy levels steady.

Plan to have study breaks and have a healthy snack ready.

Wholewheat tuna sandwich, popcorn, fruit, low-fat yoghurt or wholewheat biscuits are good snacks to boost energy levels.

3. Slow on sugar
Sweets and drinks that contain lots of sugar will only boost your energy levels for a short time and then leave you fatigued and drained.

Rather have fresh fruit, dried fruits, fruit salad, low-fat yoghurt and nuts and raisins instead of sweets and cold drinks.

4. Drink enough
It is extremely important to drink sufficient amounts of fluids during exam time to ensure your body is fully hydrated.

Dehydration may lead to fatigue, headaches and a lack of concentration. Aim for at least 6 glasses of water per day.

Other suitable fluids include rooibos tea, homemade ice teas, low-fat milk and diluted fruit juice.

5. Don’t depend on caffeine
Limit yourself to two cups of coffee per day or opt for decaffeinated coffee instead.

Too much caffeine may lead to restlessness, irritability, anxiety and stress – the last thing you need when trying to concentrate and study.

Try this brain boosting smoothie recipe!

1 banana
½ cup of fresh or frozen blueberries
50ml low-fat vanilla yoghurt
100ml apple juice
Handful of crushed nuts
