Education is important: Part 12

During your higher education experience, you’re learning new skills. You’re able to listen to teachers and lectures and read books that are from top experts in your particular field. This encourages you to:
  1. Think
  2. Analyse
  3. Explore new ideas
  4. Ask questions
  5. Be creative
These allow you to grow and develop even further which provides you with that competitive edge in the job market.

You’ll also be expanding your skills and knowledge, grasping abstract theories and concepts, expressing your thoughts clearly in writing and speech, and increasing your understanding of your community and the world.

The 21st century economy is different than 20 to 40 years ago. Today, the existing market is made up of more architects, artists, designers, healthcare workers, information technology experts, video game developers, and so forth.

You have the chance to adapt to this new era and succeed in it with a higher education that incorporates these fields into its curriculum. When you combine this knowledge with actual hands-on experience, you’ll be able to thrive in this economy.

Dutoitspan-gemeente se basare is so oud soos Metusalem.

Merry Christmas ...

Thank you for being an extraordinary teacher and working so hard to grow my mind and spirit. The top of the Christmas tree is decorated with a star, but the star in the classroom is you my teacher!

I hope you know how brightly you shine in the lives of so many and will shine in our lives for years to come.

Coming to school and seeing the faces of friends and teachers as a learner is just as magical as Christmas morning. Thank you for being my favourite faces to see. The knowledge you’ve given me as a student at HTS is better than any Christmas gift I could ever receive. Thank you for the priceless gift of learning you have given to me, and for guiding and shaping who I am becoming. I pray for the safety of all our learners and educators. May the Holy Lord keep you all safe. May He help you all cross the bridge into the new year, for some to start afresh high school and for some to finish.

It takes a Christmas miracle to grade as much work as you all do, but somehow you pull it off with only one Christmas per year. You are amazing and work so hard. I appreciate you all. Wishing you all the best with your future endeavours!

Have a Merry Christmas! And a prosperous new year!

Short Story Day

Do you love literature?

Do you feel you have an inner creative streak you’ve never yet acted on? Do you have a brilliant idea that you’re afraid isn’t long enough to make into an entire book, but that you really just want to finally write down? If so, Short Story Day could be your chance to discover a new passion and create something you can be proud of. You don’t have to have written anything before to start writing now.

After all, everyone has to start somewhere. All you need to become a writer is a pen and paper, or a computer, or a typewriter, if you will―the rest is entirely up to you. So if you have a story in you that’s waiting to be told, don’t wait and celebrate Short Story Day today!

by speelgoed met 'n
verlengde lewe!!

Optimism ...

Education is important: Part 11

In general the practical benefits of higher education in the 21st century are:

  1. Economic: As the Bureau of Labour Statistics stats reveal, people with some form of higher education earn more money and have a lower probability of unemployment.
  2. Health: Gainful employment and a positive cash-flow take away the stress factors associated with financial insecurity. As such, you are likelier to live a happier and healthier life with some form of college under your belt.
  3. Civic involvement: People with gainful employment and financial resources often give back to the community. When you earn well and your network expands, you are more likely to give to charity and become involved in volunteer work.
  4. Personal development: People with careers tend to lead more structured lives and have a stronger sense of responsibility, traits that serve as strength-builders in other areas of life.
  5. Better communication: Most jobs involve some form of written or verbal communication. As such, you will generally improve in both areas during your college and professional career.
  6. Realisation of passions: As with most people, the more you learn, the likelier you are to find your true passions in life. Through the education process, you can explore the various facets of a prospective field and find your strengths.
  7. Greater sense of discipline: The regiments of education can instil you with the discipline required in the professional world. By learning to follow complex instructions and meet strict deadlines, you will be better prepared for the rigours of the marketplace.
  8. Sense of accomplishment: Each time you complete a school assignment or job task, it’s the product of your talent and hard work.
As you can see, the benefits of higher education in the 21st century are not just career-oriented. Being able to develop yourself is invaluable, and having a higher education helps you do that.

Mr Campus CUT 2021

It has been a long but an amazing journey for Alex ...

He's a 1st year Electrical Engineering student at the Central University of  Technology, Free State Bloemfontein campus. He is a former matriculant at HTS Welkom THS. He is a member of the Quattro residential house committee, also being a member of the media team at his Res.

Mr & Ms Campus CUT was established in 2021 by the director, Mr Stefan Lotter.

Alex was selected as one of the finalists to compete for Mr and Ms Campus CUT 2021. He is the very first Mr CUT Bloemfontein Campus.

"I'm very passionate about change and innovation. I wish to bring change to fellow students of CUT such that they will stand united in everything they do, and stand up for what they know is right", Alex says.

He walks with pride with his title. He leads by example and he shall indeed take CUT to greater heights.

[We at THS are very proud of you! Keep up the good work. Live the motto: Sapientia Aurum Que E Profundis.]

Queen- Lerato Chabwe
1st Princess- Luyanda Sanyaka
2nd Princess- Rethabile Mahlatsi

King- Alex Manise
1st Prince- Xander Botha
2nd Prince- Nkosinathi Mayimane

Mr & Miss Campus' winners was selected based on several things.

1. Leadership- A person should have leadership skills and should have experience in leading a certain project, organisation and or an event.

 2. Change & Betterment- They asked questions based on change and the betterness you could bring as an individual to CUT. Changes such as student affairs, lack of funding for students, student support services (people dealing with anxiety disorders, depression and etc)

 3. Prejudging- There was a few hours of prejudging that was hosted by all judges at the venue before the event. Where each one asked different question based on the issues impacting students and the campus as a whole.

4. Confidence- They also needed confidence. They believed that a person could have all attributes, but then fail to have confidence and a voice to speak up. Therefore, confidence was one of their top attributes they raised during awards.

 5. Lastly, they wanted people who were friendly and helpful. You can also have all these above-mentioned attributes, but also fail to have moral values and fail to be a shoulder to lean on- and that is mostly what students need.

Hierdie punte waarvoor jy nou werk, gaan vir jou deure oopmaak of toemaak. In die woorde van Chris Grosser: "Opportunities don't happen, you create them".

Prayer for exam anxiety

(a prayer for God's peace to come)

Heavenly Father,

Only your peace can sustain me through the anxiety
and stresses of exam nerves.
Your peace surpasses all understanding.
I ask for this gift and choose to lean upon you at this time.
Lord, come and remind me of your unfailing love.
Remind me that you hold me safe,
you understand me,
and you cherish me.
I lay down my fears before you.
I leave them at the foot of the cross,
for you have overcome the world.
I choose to give you all my concerns,
worries and fears of failure.
I trust that your loving hand will hold me through these exams

Wenke wat werk vir wiskunde!

Exam prayer

[An adaptation of Ps 23]

The Lord is my shepherd
of what shall I be afraid?
He peacefully lets me
enter the exam room.

He enlightens my intellect
He leads me in the consciousness of learning
for His name's sake.

Even when I look at the paper
and find the questions difficult
I will stay calm,
as He is with me.

The goodness of my teachers
and what they taught me,
will bear fruit and I will live
to praise His name
for all eternity.
